Venice through my eyes

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

Hello everyone!

Today I would like to talk about my design I made for "The servant of two masters" by Carlo Goldoni. I still remember with joy the process for this project! After an intense research about the period, including, of course historical facts, and images with furniture, costumes, paintings, photographies from Venice, watching movies and a long walk through Venice with Google Maps :)) I still couldn't find an answer for my question: "How can I make Venice in a way that wasn't made before ?" How can I capture its atmosphere and offer a playground for some characters like Truffaldino and his comic scenes?

And one day I just decided to take a break, I went for a walk with some friends in a park closer to my place. I've been there thousands of times since I was a child and then I saw again the pontoons (the ones that I visible in the picture from above), but this time they looked different for me, I saw in them the little street from Venice that seems to levitate above the water ! I fell in love with this image, and I started to draw it in different ways, in the end my set design was based of these numerous pontoons that move and make different ways for the characters, like a labirint that is changing permanently but just at the level of the floor!

Who would have known that what a really needed back that was a walk through the park? Inspiration comes in unexpected ways! What inspired you the last time when you took a walk ? Let me know in the comments!

Have a beautiful and inspirational day ahead!!!
