Hedda Gabler, Act I, "Hedda Gabler" by Henrik Ibsen
Hello everyone!
Today I'll talk about one of my projects, the set design for "Hedda Gable" by Henrik Ibsen. So everything started with a simple question: how can I make the flowers on stage, different? Because while I was reading the text I noticed that this realist space suffer a change when Hedda Gabler take over!
So the new married couple just moved here in their new house, a really old house. They didn't start to put their personalities in here, they still need to buy some furniture, but they receive a lot of flowers as congratulations! Such a lively and joyful beginning for a young married couple! But not for Hedda!! She is not happy in this marriage, and the flowers are an unpleasant reminder of it, she also hate to be compared with a flower (unlike Nora)! And when she is able to make adjustments in the house she just get rid of them!
Looking through some images the one from above captured my eyes and an idea came! I was thinking of making the house wall from transparent pannels painted with a lot of flowers, colourful and beautiful flowers, exactly like the ones Hedda hated to be compared with! Of course I chose flowers with meaning for Hedda's personally and evolution. And for the second part of the play, when the big change hepens I wanted to make it rain over this transparent panels making the paint of the flowers wash little by little making the pannels so dirty and then let us to see behind them the savage garden with black silhouettes of trees. Such a big contrast between the colorful and worm atmosphere from the first part and the dark, cold black and white image from now! So that was the idea with which a started to create the space for this play.
Let me know in the comments what is your favourite thing with flowers, the one that inspires you the most! It can be a painting, a photography, your garden, a favourite place from the park or something that you've seen in a movie!
Have a beautiful and inspirational day ahead!
